Today researchers can finally say with certainty that bras do not cause breast cancer. Lu Chen, a researcher at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle was interested in this myth after claims have been made from media reports and books. Reports once suggested “that bras may hamper lymph circulation and drainage and interfere with waste removal, thereby boosting breast cancer risk” according to CBS News. The connection was made also based on the fact that breast cancer was more common in developed countries where more women wear bras. Heavier women are also more likely to wear bras and also more likely to develop breast cancer. However, they don’t develop breast cancer because of their bra wearing but because obesity is a known risk factor for breast cancer. For more risk factors check out our article.
Researchers gathered information from subjects about their bra habits such as if it was an underwire bra, when the women first started wearing a bra, how long they wear their bra a day and cup size. It makes no difference. Women no longer have to worry that their underwire bras will give them cancer, and breast cancer patients no longer have to feel any guilt about wearing a bra. Now you know that if you hear bras cause breast cancer, it’s not true!
