UBCF loves you, Olivia Newton-John

August 17, 2022

Beloved Australian actress and singer passed away peacefully on August 8th, 2022 after battling breast cancer for 30 years.

You may know her from her blockbuster movie, Grease, or her pop music hits of the 70s and 80s. Olivia Newton-John was a kind, beautiful woman of many talents. Since 1992, she battled breast cancer on and off, and by 2020, she faced stage 4 metastatic breast cancer. Olivia has always publicly shared her fight with breast cancer, her treatments and her unwavering hope. On August 8th, Olivia passed away at her ranch in Santa Ynez, CA with friends and family at her side. She was 73 years young.

Olivia was committed to cancer research. She raised money for decades and opened the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness and Research Centre in Australia in 2015. This centre partnered with a local hospital and the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Research Institute. Olivia was also an advocate for plant-based treatments that included herbs, medical marijuana, and Eastern medicine practices.

Olivia lived nearly a third of her life fighting breast cancer. The treatments she endured included a partial mastectomy, chemotherapy and breast reconstruction. This did not stop her from being an incredible activist, performer, and pop culture icon. Her angelic voice still swoons in people’s ears today. During her extremely successful career, Olivia Newton-John won four Grammy Awards and sold more than 100 million albums.

Olivia has touched so many people throughout her life and career. Many took to social media to share their condolences and love letters to the actress and singer. Her Grease co-star, John Travolta, wrote on instagram, “My dearest Olivia, you made all of our lives so much better,” the actor shared. “Your impact was incredible. I love you so much.” He then signed it: “Yours from the moment I saw you and forever! Your Danny, your John.” Her husband, John Easterling wrote a touching and heartfelt message on her personal instagram as well, sharing, “At Olivia’s deepest essence she was a healer using her mediums of song, of words, of touch. She was the most courageous woman I’ve ever known. Her bandwidth for genuinely caring for people, for nature and all creatures almost eclipses what is humanly possible”.

Olivia Newton-John believed in the power of positive thinking and its healing effects. She often shared her optimism with the world: “I think every day is a blessing. You never know when your time is over; we all have a finite amount of time on this planet, and we just need to be grateful for that.” Olivia’s warmth, talent, and love she brought to the world will continue to live on as her legacy.
