Focus on Early Detection of Male Breast Cancer

HUNTINGTON STATION, NY (PRWEB) FEBRUARY 17, 2016

The national nonprofit, United Breast Cancer Foundation (UBCF) announces the debut of the “Early Detection” Public Service Announcement (PSA) scheduled for release during the 58th Daytona 500 weekend, February 19 – 21, 2016. The annual Daytona 500, known as “The Great American Race,” began in 1959, is 200 laps and covers 500 miles. An estimated 300,000 people will be in attendance on race day, February 21st. The “Early Detection” PSA will air on the Jumbo-tron 4 times per hour, 12 hours a day for 3 days, making up to 1.2 million impressions. During the event, UBCF representatives will be interviewing spectators and educating attendees regarding UBCF’s seven life-supporting programs available to women, men and families nation-wide. UBCF is honored to be a part of the Daytona 500, increasing the awareness of male breast cancer and reducing the stigma of a diagnosis. Spectators at home can tune in to the event on Fox and watch for UBCF’s PSA’s on the Jumbo-tron.

The “Early Detection” PSA focuses on male breast cancer and early detection services. Men with breast cancer in their family or those that carry the BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene have a higher risk of developing breast cancer. According to the latest annual data from the National Cancer Institute, an estimated 2,350 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and sadly, 440 will lose their battle. The high mortality rate in men is due in part to later diagnosis as men are not encouraged by health professionals to be screened or self-examine their breast tissue. UBCF encourages all men to learn the self-breast exam and be routinely screened by a doctor.

UBCF’s Executive Director, Ms. Stephanie Mastroianni has this to share, “The United Breast Cancer Foundation recognizes the critical nature of increasing the awareness of male breast cancer and reducing the stigma that is attached to the disease.” Ms. Mastroianni continues, “Many people, women in particular, have addressed the issue of male breast cancer with UBCF and are curious to learn how we serve men battling this disease. UBCF’s programs have always been open to men, including our Breast Screening Program. The opportunity to be a part of the Daytona 500 is the perfect occasion to further expand our message of early detection and let men know that UBCF is here for them.”

UBCF’s mission, to make a positive difference in the lives of those affected by breast cancer, is carried out every day through seven life-supporting patient and family programs. Services are available to women, men and families regardless of age, race, gender, ethnicity, income or medical insurance coverage. People in need of a breast screening or breast health services may visit UBCF online, ubcf.org, or call 1-877-822-4287. UBCF accepts vehicle and property donations.
